January 2025 Newsletter

Anpétu waste yuha ye! As Education Manager here at the Indigenous Journalists Association, I’m so excited to send this email to our members this week, as we have some very exciting things to announce for our student members!

First, applications are now open for the 2025 cohort of the Indigenous Journalism Fellowship! We are also taking applications for mentors this year, so if you’ve ever considered becoming a mentor for an Indigenous journalism student, now’s the time! The deadline for both applications is January 31.

Second, I am so excited to announce a new website specifically for all things student-related at IJA: ijastudents.org! I’m constantly updating and adding new items, so check there for news about trainings, scholarships, camps, internships, webinars, fellowships and more.

Next up, I’m pleased to share that IJA’s membership committee voted to approve some new membership benefits for our high school and college student members. Student members can expect to see these updated benefits roll out within the next few weeks, including access to IJA students-only resources such as Slack, private opportunities and resource database (updated weekly with new calls for pitches, internship/fellowship/job postings, etc.), quarterly webinars with media professionals and monthly office hours with IJA leadership. Not a member yet? Joining is super easy!

Finally, as part of our new and improved student programming, IJA plans to regularly feature outstanding alumni of programs such as the Indigenous Journalism Fellowship, the AAJA Pacific Islander Scholarship and others. Be sure to check out Kadin Mills’ profile. Have an idea for someone we should highlight? Let me know!

As always, please feel free to check ijastudents.org or email me with any questions, concerns or ideas. And if you’re not a student, don’t worry – IJA has some exciting things planned for you as well this year, so stay tuned!

Philamaye,
Sheena Roetman-Wynn
IJA Education Manager
