IJA is committed to increasing the representation of Indigenous journalists in mainstream media.
One of the ways IJA supports and empowers members is through the annual Indigenous Journalism Fellowship, open to current Indigenous, American Indian, Alaskan Native, Native Hawaiian, First Nations and Métis college students, undergraduate and graduate, pursuing media-related degrees.
IJF was created specifically for aspiring Indigenous journalists and is an opportunity for students to deepen and broaden their reporting and multimedia skills, while learning from tribal journalists and news industry professionals from across the country.
Student fellows work with mentors to produce content throughout the fellowship while completing a virtual curriculum designed to fill in the blanks left by traditional journalism schools. Fellows will work with individually paired mentors representing broadcast, radio, print and digital media. This innovative experience is designed to leverage the inclusivity and accessibility of online learning while allowing fellows to continue with classwork, jobs, internships and other responsibilities.
As a capstone to the program, fellows will attend and participate in the annual Indigenous Media Conference (IMC). All fellow travel expenses, including registration, travel, hotel and meals, are covered by IJA.
Fellows will also receive a one-year membership to IJA.
Mentorship
IJA members interested in becoming fellowship mentors are also welcome to apply. Mentors will interview with selected members of the IJA Education Committee and be paired with a mentee according to their expressed interests, experience and strengths. Mentors will work with fellows, offering guidance and encouragement while students complete fellowship projects beginning in Spring 2025. 2025 IJF mentors will receive a $500 stipend and a complimentary 2025 Indigenous Media Conference registration at the completion of the fellowship. Mentors may opt-in on the application to donate their time if desired.
